PROXAUT’s AGVs for coils handling. The success story of the dedicated clamp provided by BOLZONI Group

2024 Box News BOLZONI 1

Trade exhibitions are special occasions for building customer relationships and strengthening ties between companies and their suppliers. During LOGIMAT 2024, PROXAUT and BOLZONI Group shared a remarkable success story! Don’t miss the ending to understand why…

In PROXAUT’s catalog, stands out a BOLZONI clamp photo. This dedicated clamp is showcased in the brochure because it represents a truly unique application—a model of AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) with significant commercial interest. The AGV in question belongs to a facility that stands as one of PROXAUT’s flagship productions.

Let’s delve into the details: The customer, based in the United Arab Emirates, equipped part of its autonomous guided forklift fleet with Auramo rotating clamps, manufactured by BOLZONI Group. These AGVs, part of the “lifter” series, operate without operators and transport plastic film coils weighing up to 2,500 kg. The current fleet comprises six vehicles and operates within a recently constructed facility spanning over 15,000 square meters. It runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, across three shifts.

The specialized clamp from BOLZONI  Group allows the AGV to handle specific load units, including plastic and laminated film coils with an outer diameter of up to 1,800 mm. Not only does the clamp securely grip the load, but it also rotates it in a predetermined direction. This customized solution enables the AGV to pick up coils exiting printing and cutting machines with a horizontal core and stack them vertically. The coil storage area effectively consists of stacks reaching heights up to 7 meters. Due to the height requirements for loading and unloading film rolls, a hybrid guidance fleet was necessary. Two guidance systems alternate to ensure efficiency and safety throughout the facility.

The laser guidance system allows the forklift to move outside the warehouse and navigate to the area where the coils exit the printing, laminating, and inspection machines (printer, laminator & doctor machine). This system relies on a state-of-the-art laser scanner with extremely high performance and precision. Using this information, the vehicle’s computer accurately transmits the AGV’s position, even in varying environmental conditions. The laser scanner provides vigilant and continuous 360-degree vision, essential for safety and precise navigation.

The other type of guidance used by the clamp-equipped forklifts is the inertial guidance system. It enables navigation through the use of an antenna that communicates with a gyroscope, providing absolute position information. Thanks to this device, the forklift or shuttle can transit and pass over magnets embedded in the floor. In this specific case, magnetic navigation comes into play when the AGV needs to lift the load to reach a height of 7 meters—specifically when stacking 5 coils on top of each other. The magnetic inertial guidance system is essential within the warehouse when it comes to stacking coils, that are the customer’s load units (UDC) at a height exceeding 4.4 meters—the same height as the laser head assembly.

Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technologies of the United Arab Emirates published an interview in which our client’s company president discusses products and innovations. Among the scrolling images, you can see PROXAUT’s AGVs and the rolls clamp provided by BOLZONI Group…
